I still love this a lot, even though on every reread I find more and more of his flights of fancy too much. But I still get a lump in my throat when I get to the end.

I have spent the past half week trying to articulate just why I had misgivings about Microserfs, or what it was that seemed unappealing to me, but in the end that doesn't matter much. Because I ended up having a peek at the first page and I was immediately hooked. Not in an I-need-to-know-what-happens-way, because the book isn't really plot-driven, but because the style was funny and weird in a good way. It remained lovely all the way through and I had to take frequent giggle breaks.

I certainly didn't expect to like the main character so much, but he turned out to be a decent person and often kind of charming in a quiet way. All the "random" quirks and impulses made him very multifaceted and real, not the bland and forgettable guy I was expecting.
The entire cast is wonderful in that way, actually.

The restless atmosphere, the musings on identity and the concerns (about long-term employment, for example) really resonated with me. It felt very familiar, even though it's all from before I was even born.
