I loved this book! The Mayan mythology is so fascinating, and Cervantes masterfully communicates the history of this people. Our main characters are compelling and brave - it's a pleasure to read about them. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

If you’re a fan of Rick Riordan’s books, then you will love this book. Packed to the brim with fun characters, terrifying monsters, lazy gods, and lots of quick wit, The Storm Runner is a book every kid and kid-at-heart can enjoy. I’m disappointed it read so much like Percy Jackson. If a few things had been changed around to make the book a bit more distinct, I would have enjoyed it more.

Huge fan of Rick Riordan, but boy oh boy, not a huge fan of this.
Tyler...if you didn’t like it, why three stars? Great question.

This is a solid piece of writing, but I found myself bored consistently throughout the book. That boredom unfortunately led me to have force myself to read one or two chapters a night to get through it. However, let me get through some positives first because, like I said, it’s a good piece of writing.

Positives:
1. A new young adult book on the topic of Mayan gods/goddesses
2. Multiple female heroines
3. A “good vs. evil” concept, where “good” isn’t easy, doesn’t always make the right decisions, and needs help.
4. A male protagonist that isn’t afraid to ask for help/advice, and doesn’t portray that a male must always know the answer.

There are more, but this review is already getting too long, so I’ll move forward.

The major wish I have for this book is that it had followed the “Rick Riordan” book format. This book isn’t written by him because he doesn’t have vast amounts of knowledge in Mayan history (which is fine), but I wish he just brought in the experts and wrote the book himself because unfortunately, 2/3s of the book contains a VERY slow plot line and really doesn’t introduce an excitement aspect until chapter 20 (halfway through the story).

Overall, it’s a good story with a lot of great information that I feel many readers will not know. However, I’m not sure this book will be leaping off the shelves or being staying in the hands of many readers (especially teenagers) for very long.

A fun, middle-grades book based on Mayan mythology. Made me want to learn more about Mayan myths!

This was a miss with me. I like reading with diverse casts and about cultures/folklore with which I’m less familiar, and so that and their deployment here counts for something. The kicker is that the plot is fairly herky jerky with a tendency to be opaque, and I know this is middle grade, but good granola is Zane a tough hang.

I can't even begin to say how great this book is! Mayan myths, Latino and disabled representation, and all-around amazingness... It all comes together in this book that is so hard to put down! People need to read it and people need to talk about it!
