The Storm Runner is a new series that is being published under Rick Riordan's imprint at Disney Hyperion. As a huge mythology nerd and writer of the popular Percy Jackson series, Rick Riordan wanted to bring more mythology to readers even if it wasn't mythology that he was as familiar with. As a result, he partnered with Disney and this fantastic imprint came into being. The Storm Runner deals with Mayan mythology and gods, which I was incredibly interested in. Despite being a mythology nerd myself, I only have cursory knowledge of the Maya gods and heroes. I am always excited to learn more, especially as it was own voices and the author was talking about her own culture.

The mythology in this book is what shone for me. I adored getting to learn about the Mayan gods and heroes, the land of the dead, and everything else that Cervantes wove into the story. It was the actual story and characters that let me down. A small part of that was the fact that I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator was not particularly enjoyable to listen to. It did not allow me to form a connection to Zane, although I am not sure that I would have particularly liked him as a character even if I had been reading the physical book.

The supporting characters were there... yeah, I can't give you much more than that. I didn't like Brooks. Hondo could be funny at times, but in a week or two, I don't know that I would find him particularly memorable. Ms. Cab was honestly just really naggy and yelling all the time (although that obviously was more annoying when listening to the audiobook, she was so screechy and nasal.)

The plot was interesting and I enjoyed it, but the whole book was clearly emulating Rick Riordan's style. The characters tried to be quippy and make hilarious one-liners (sometimes succeeding and being funny, but sometimes just being forced and cringy). It just felt like a parody of Percy Jackson. Like I said previously - it was the mythology that I loved most in the story. That was amazing and I want more of it.

I learned so much about the Maya in this book. It was really interesting and I'm excited to found out what happens next.

I was provided a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
After the successful read of the first Riordan imprint Aru Shah and the End of Time I was really excited to give The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes a chance. There were a lot of things that I enjoyed about this book and some things that really really annoyed me.

The Storm Runner follows Zane, teenager living a normal life in New Mexico at . . . the base of a giant volcano? After a run in with a mysterious girl who can shape shift into a hawk, Zane finds out that not only are the old Maya legends true, but he is destined to release the God of Death from his prison (a God of Death who just so happens to want to destroy the world). Now Zane has three days to kill a deity before he has to become a soldier of the underworld (which word on the street says is worse than death). Can Zane make it in time, or will the world be destroyed?

The Storm Runner has an interesting premise. I am intrigued about reading a new series based around Maya mythology. I also really like some of the characters in the story. If you've read a Percy Jackson book, then you'll be prepared for the formulaic way book one develops. This has never been a problem for me in the past, but Cervantes does deviate and throw in some twists. I also like that Zane is far from perfect. He has to live with a disability and deal with the bullying he gets at school. That said, I also had major problems with his character. This is personal preference, and having finished the book, I can see why Zane acts the way he does, but I still found him incredibly annoying. For one, he's impetuous. He doesn't listen to people or he immediately questions EVERYBODY, even when somebody suggests a blatantly good idea.

I really liked the atmosphere Cervantes is crafting, but everything felt like a shallow dive. I'm not sure if this was because I am not as familiar with Maya mythology or not, but I found myself wanting more explanations about Gods and motivations throughout the story. Hopefully this will be solved in the second book.

My main problem is the ending. No spoilers though. It had a very Deus ex machina feel to it. Or, it felt like the author realized she had to finish up the story soon, but there were some plot holes, so she came up with a bogus solution to solve everything. Also, I love animals as much as the next person, but Zane really obsesses over his dog and then suddenly forgets her for a large chunk of the book until the plot demands he remembers her. It was really annoying. I would still say this is a solid read. I know a lot of the readers at my library will enjoy it, so I look forward to suggesting it.

Kitabı bitireli neredeyse bir ay olacak ama ben daha buraya yeni geliyorum. :)
Rick Riordan her zaman sevdiğim bir yazar olmuştur, Magnus Chase serisi hariç tabii. Dolayısıyla onun yolundan giden ve mitolojiyi günümüzle buluşturan başka yazarları okumak da epey heyecan verici oluyor.
Ki Fırtına Koşucu zaten Riordan'ın önsözüyle, Rick Riordan Presents (Rick Riordan Sunar) adlı bir dizinin çatısı altında yayınlanıyor.
Her neyse. Kitap maya ve Aztek mitolojisini günümüze taşıyor, 13 yaşındaki Zeyn Obispo'nun maceralarını okuyoruz.
Benim gerçekten severek okuduğum bir kitap oldu Fırtınakoşucu. Gerek karakterlerimizin yaşadığı maceralar, Zeyn'in hafif alaycı anlatımı, tanrılar ve canavarlar vs vs...

I really liked this book it is always nice to read about a mythology that is not Greek or Roman. I really liked the characters especially Zane and Brooks I found them both to be easy to like characters their motivations were easy to understand. Zane is an easy to like character he is a boy judged for something that is not his fault who then finds out he is so much more than he ever dreamed. I really liked that he would go above and beyond for his dog Rosie I liked how that ended up. I really liked the plot it started with a boy and his dog with that boy losing his dog and finding things about himself he would never of put together on his own. So overall I really liked this book I will for sure read the sequel.
