What?!?! A main character with one leg shorter than the other? Speaking of books as mirrors and windows. I’ve never before read about a character with different length legs. Due to a skiing accident at age 11, I ended up with legs 2 inches different in length. It comes with a host of issues like limping, spine curvature, hip pain, difficulty running and long distance walking, people calling you gimpy... so interesting to see a character with that pretty rare disability and be able to relate. I actually feel EXCITED more than I should be and it really has struck home with me that my mission for diverse books in libraries is SO important.

I enjoyed this book more than most Riordan books so I'm glad that the Rick Riordan imprint does NOT mean the books have the same fart-joke style humor I get tired of. This book was full of adventure, magic, villains, heroes, with a twist of overcoming a disability (with magic of course, but still great at capturing the feelings of the main character). Fans of Percy Jackson will definitely like this one. There are touches of Spanish which add to the voice of the main character and I love the authenticity.

5/5 *

What an adventure ! I love everything about this and hope for a movie adaptation. It was well done and so , AMAZING ! I have nothing more to say but read it !

Zane's adventure was filled with self-discovery, quirky gods and goddesses, some scary monsters and a whole lot of sass (mostly from Zane).

Looking forward to the next one

A Mayan mythology based fantasy that delivers a good yarn, however the story lagged a little and could have been trimmed.

This was well-done, but rang pretty similar to Rick Riordan, which I guess was/is the point that he is endorsing it. It was neat to learn about Mayan mythology (there's a goddess of chocolate! The properties of chocolate are similar to ambrosia). Much of the book reminded me of Percy Jackson and srsly had similar moments, just Mayan? Overall, a good read.

I love it! As a lover of mythology and Rick Riordan's books, I couldn't wait to start this! Mayan mythology was a bit new to me and it was fun to learn about them. I can't wait to read the next book.

I really liked this book it is always nice to read about a mythology that is not Greek or Roman. I really liked the characters especially Zane and Brooks I found them both to be easy to like characters their motivations were easy to understand. Zane is an easy to like character he is a boy judged for something that is not his fault who then finds out he is so much more than he ever dreamed. I really liked that he would go above and beyond for his dog Rosie I liked how that ended up. I really liked the plot it started with a boy and his dog with that boy losing his dog and finding things about himself he would never of put together on his own. So overall I really liked this book I will for sure read the sequel.

Not quite as memorable or fun as the Percy Jackson books’ success which inspired it, but a good story and interesting introduction to Maya mythology. I loved how it focused on familial love, as well as mythology uninfluenced by the Greco-Roman world. The author represents her culture well.

True rating; 3.25 stars

A good story which has its funny moments and great representation in its cast, but I didn't really connect with it. Usually it is a pet peeve for me when characters don't reflect a bit, having that bit of self awareness to realise some things for themselves, but it felt with Zane that there was too much self-reflection going on, even for a teenager.
