I love the characters I love the world. I need the next book NOW but I have to wait until September
I enjoyed this book a lot. Although the beginning seemed to drag, I seriously enjoyed this book. The mythology of the worldbuilding was absolutely amazing. I learned so much from reading it and has increased my interest in Maya mythology (and as someone with Mexican roots, I was happy to read about something that came from the native people of my country) and the characters. I found Zane to be very likable. I’ve noticed with other reviews that people tend to say that Zane is a Percy Jackson wannabe and an idiot sometimes. While these opinions are valid, I feel many forget that this is a book made for middle grade readers. And despite Percy Jackson being a very great character, I do not believe him and Zane are all that similar. I would say my least favorite character was Brooks. While I still liked her, she was significantly less developed compared to Zane even though she is one of the main characters. However, I do believe she will improve in the next books. The internalized ableism of Zane was kind of hard to read at times, but I’ve already started the second book and it seems that Zane doesn’t harbor so much internalized ableism. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I think it’s a very important book for people to read and get exposed to Maya mythology, yet another culture that is so rich but not talked about at all. Definitely a good read, and I absolutely recommend for fans of middle grade fantasy, and even YA fantasy.

This was really good, but I had some small problems with it and right now just isn’t the best time for me to be borrowing this.
Still, I may come back and finish this one day. The utilization of Maya mythology was really cool!

I loved to learn things about the Maya myths. The Rick Riordan books had some leverage because everybody knows something about egyptian, norsk or greek mythology. In this case i had no idea about this amazing culture. My favourite gods so far are Hurakan, Mat, and the goddess from xibalba i forgot her name I am so sorry.
i can see this book series becoming big.
I thank rick for publishing this book and i thank jennifer for writing a book about a mythology that has almost completely been erased.
These gods may be worse than the greeks with all their laws about demigods not being allowed.
I realized Maya mythology has a lot of things in commonwith greek and norsk mythology. For starters, both norsk and maya believe the world is set on a tree, and the underworld is described a little bit like the greek one, with rivers of different disgusting things. And I say disgusting because Mayas were very descriptive when it comes to death, maggots, and stinkiness in general.
I can't wait for the second book because i really want Zane to save Hurakan. I think he is probably the only god that actually cares about his child form all the other books about demigods.
Sorry Poseidon

I...wanted to like this more than I did. I just couldn't connected to anything or anyone on the book!
First of all, I want to say how amazing I think the idea behind Rick Riordan presents is, to publish books by authors from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds.
I absolutely loved this book! The action started from the beginning and kept me engaged until the very end. I didn't know anything at all about Mayan mythology before reading this book, so I enjoyed learning along the way.
Zane is an amazing character and I enjoyed watching his growth throughout the book. He went from thinking of himself as a "freak" to seeing just how special and powerful he really is. Rosie is amazing also! She is so cute and I could picture her perfectly. I was actually able to do that throughout the book. Jennifer did a wonderful job with describing the setting and everything that was going on in a way that allowed me to picture it perfectly, like I was right there as it was happening. Hondo, Brooks, and Jazz are enjoyable characters as well. I loved them all!
I loved going on this adventure with Zane and the others. The suspense built throughout the book and kept the pages turning. I couldn't read this book fast enough! I had to know how it was going to end. I laughed, I cried, and I was shocked at the twists that I didn't see coming.
The last couple pages of the story gave me shivers and left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling. Pick up a copy of this book and experience the story for yourself. This is a middle grade book, but anyone, no matter what age, can enjoy it.
I was thrilled to find out that there will be a second book, so Zane's story will continue! I can't wait to see where these characters go next.
