Simultaneously his most challenging and most rewarding work, Resurrection is a kind of anti-Crime and Punishment, a work that seriously wrestles with the ethical and material concerns its narrative presents. How does one seriously enact the imitation of Christ in an economic framework where violence and exploitation are concomitant to the normal functioning of society? A true masterpiece.

I found this to be a really powerful read as much as I found the protagonist annoying and unbearable and wanted more of Katyusha’s inferiority to be explored. The exploration of the prison system was genuinely fascinating and the spotlight given to the many characters in and around the separate classes was really powerful. Was not convinced by the biblical and didactic ending nor by the resurrection of Nekhlyudov but that’s okay, that’s late Tolstoy for you. The damnation of the political system and its unlawful political imprisonments and farcical aristocracy was genius. All in all, a very interesting read and unexpected novel from Tolstoy… need to do more of a deep dive into his less canonical work now!
For me, this is Tolstoy's best novel and the best novel that I have ever read. The writing is great and he diagnoses humanity with such precision that all can relate. The ending makes me mad because it seems like he gives up on a solution after having done such a great job excavating the problem. Nonetheless, this is Tolstoy at his best.
"Възкресение" стой в сянката на голямата си сестра "Ана Каренина", и техния батко "Война и мир", но това по никакъв начин не значи по-малко въздействаща. И не, не се разказва за възкръсването на дадена личност (той си знае), спокойно Толстой не е написал и роман за зомбита. Тук говорим за една друга смърт, това е смъртта на един народ, които трябва да мине през тази смърт, за да може да възкръсне и да бъде пречистен. Всичко това ние виждаме през очите на главния герой Нехлюдов, който първи минава през това пречистване. Той разбира как едно негово действие е съсипало един чужд живот. Живот на човек, който той е обичал някога. В този момент нещо в Нехлюдов се пречупва, след което той решава, че не е късно да поправи стореното от него. Толстой ни хвърля от една крайност, в друга. От затворите, и хората пребиваващи в тях, до залите, театрите, министерствата, и хората властващи в тях. За разлика от предишните романи, в които повечето герои са от елита на обществото, тук героите са престъпниците, затворниците и селяните. В желанието си да помогне на „престъпниците“ Нехлюдов среща истинските престъпници, тези които макар да спазват закона, прекрачват и потъпкват човешките закони. Хора управляващи страна, в която могат да арестуват хората без причина, но за да ги освободят е нужна. Хора, които приемат егоистичното като нещо напълно естествено, а саможертвата като нещо странно и чуждо. Това е тази смърт, която спохожда народа, смъртта на ценностите. Ставайки свидетел на нехуманното отношение към затворниците и обикновенните хора, но и виждайки тяхната борбеност и добрина, главният герой стига до извода, че хората не трябва да се осъждат един друг, а всеки да е съдник на себе си. Само по този начин човешкото ще надделее.
