This is the first book by this author I have read, a book club choice and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the character and his struggles and the storyline was excellent. Well worth a read.

Another outstanding entry in the series. In this one psychologist Joe O'Loughlin defends his daughter's best friend who is thought to have murdered her father. The plot itself becomes pretty complicated and involved so many characters I actually lost track of who was who by the end. I really enjoyed reading this book but I did have a few problems with it.

I don't know if it's just me, but the author seemed to be punishing Joe in this novel. Why does the author expect the reader to understand and sympathize with Joe's actions but have every other character in the novel get angry with him over these same actions? I really didn't understand his wife and his daughter's resentment toward Joe. And to be honest I'm really tired of reading about passive-aggressive women in crime novels.

I would caution those of a sensitive nature that this book includes issues of incest, underage sex, and a very disturbing attack on a pet.

Interesting and good to read as a stand alone. In fact, I didn't realize it was book four until I came to fill out the review.

I would have like more time on the denouement. The twisted undercurrents take so long to build that it almost wraps up too quickly, although I very much enjoyed how it did.

I don’t think it’s possible for Michael Robotham to write a book I won’t enjoy.

“Bleed for Me,” in my opinion, begins part two of the Joseph O’Loughlin series. Until this point, Joe has been assisting the police with crimes and fighting for his marriage’s survival simultaneously. At the end of book 3, there is a clear turning point that signaled to the reader that Joe’s arc was about to take a major shift. It’s a painful turn of events, but one that was a long time coming. Robotham’s characters are so genuine that it’s nearly impossible not to be affected by what happens to them.

In this J O’L installment, the best friend of Joe’s daughter is suspected for the murder of her father, Ray. Feeling obligated to help the girl, Sienna, Joe involves himself in the investigation in order to prove that Sienna was not responsible for the murder. Soon enough, Joe finds that there is far more to the story than he anticipated. The book deals with issues of sexual abuse by a parent, pedophilia between a man and a teenage girl, sex trafficking, and multiple murders. I don’t think I need to tell you that this book is complicated.

For whatever reason, it was this book that made me finally understand Julianne’s exasperation over Joe’s actions. As much as I want everyone to be part of one big, happy family, I cannot deny that I understand how Julianne has such a love-hate relationship with Joe. It saddens me that Joe cannot seem to resist getting involved with dangerous investigations that put his family—and himself—at risk. He has a fatalistic mindset that has convinced him that his Parkinson’s will be his undoing; in reality, he has sabotaged his family life without any help from Mr. Parkinson. I wish that Joe would choose, once and for all, between his family and his psychological work. Instead, he continues to live on the fence between the two, and that damages his presence and effectiveness in both worlds.

I thought this was a five-star novel… until Joe and Julianne’s cases collided. There was so much going on with Sienna that if felt a bit ridiculous to add in an incredibly outlandish angle involving Novak Brennan. Robotham had great material, and it felt like he went too far. The Novak angle would have been better in another book. The odds that the two cases would be linked is too unfeasible for me.

Aside from the mention of Novak Brennan, “Bleed for Me” is an excellent novel that consistently supplies the reader with twists and turns. Not only does it have excellent thriller/suspense material, but Robotham has also managed to deliver fully fleshed-out characters with captivating relationship development. Michael Robotham truly knows how to hook the reader from every angle.

Really like this author. Good murder mystery but more to it than that. Definitely putting more on hold at the library.
