• What did I think of this book?
When you're reading books like The Hate U Give, you're reading someone's decision against silence.
This was such a heartbreakingly honest account of what is happening in America. As a white reader, the experience this story affords its readers cannot be taken for granted. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this book takes you into the heart of Garden Heights after the main character has witnessed the wrongful murder of her best friend Khalil by a police officer. I wish everyone to read this book because it shines a light on a broken system.

This book was well written and decently paced. I found the author could easily swim in and out of challenging topics and into light-hearted moments with ease. I really appreciated that aspect of the book a lot. I was choked up multiple times, shed tears, and laughed out loud as I experienced the story of Starr Carter and her family. I found that the material was presented in a manner that was very accessible without overly indulging in the violence. I also appreciated the inner monologue of the main character struggling between her two selves in two different cultures. I recommend this book to everyone.

This is one of the essential reads for every teenager (and adult too) in my opinion.

This book shows in a great way how the situation of systematic racism is in many modern communities today, and that the fight for equal rights is still far from over.

Would recommend for everyone in need of some inpiration to stand up for yourself and others, even though it feels like there is no end to the fight.
