Stephen King really is a master at writing characters that I really enjoy. This book is pretty much about a college kid, Devin Jones, who has a summer job at an amusement park. Most of the book is just going through his life that summer. This honestly sounds pretty boring, but I was never bored because I just wanted to know more about Devin and the rest of the characters. If you’re looking for a great plot, this might not be the book for you. But if you want great character work in a shorter book, read this!

Guy works at a carnival like amusement park for a summer after getting his heart broken. Makes some friends, solves a murder. Some mystery, supernatural stuff, a bit of a love story. A good summer read. I enjoyed it.

This book wasn't what I was expecting. This book was less horror and more a book of self-discovery and reflection for our lead character, Dev.

So good. Is it a bit of a campy horror? Yeah. But it's short for a King book and it still packs a punch. It was more of a slice of life tale with a pinch of paranormal, mystery, and horror sprinkled in here or there. I love the characters, the mystery was pretty good, and it tugged at my heartstrings at the very end. I'm happy we got such a realistic narrator, someone who is flawed but inherently human. Everyone was realistic and likeable; even the killer, which made it even more of a punch once you realized who it was. I really recommend this for anyone who wants to experience King's style without having to read 600+ pages (and tbh, the characters really are some of his best in my opinion, sometimes he has trouble with making people flushed out and likeable).

This was the perfect summer read. It has everything: coming of age, carnies, haunted theme park ride,  murder, and sex.

I wasn't expecting to learn the identity of the murderer but it was an amazing twist!

Loved it the whole way through. 10/10 would recommend.
