Listened to the audio which was only an hour long. Great for inspiration.
oh this just filled me with so much hope and joy. i love neil gaiman

Built from several essays by Neil Gaiman with unique illustrations...his words capture the ideas of why we make art and why it's important. It reads fast...highly recommended.
This book makes me want to start drawing again. The illustrations are amazing; the book seems alive. Lively. Animated, despite being unmoving sketches. And cohesive, despite accompanying a graduation speech instead any actual story--great use of character design.
It really is inspiring. I mean that literally. Will draw for sandwiches.

This was originally a graduation speech that Neil Gaiman gave in 2012. You can find a transcript here:

and video of the speech here:

The illustrations accompanying this book are very good, though. If a friend or your library has it, I recommend you borrow it.

Mr. Neil Gaiman truly is a gem in this world. Sorely and dearly needed this one!
Even though I totally agree with the text by Neil Gaiman, I was a bit disappointed as I'd read or heard most of it before from his essays and speeches, e.g., The Reading Agency's lecture 2013 (which was a brilliant speech, by the way). However, I was not in the least bit disappointed with the illustrations by one of my favorite illustrators, Chris Riddell.
A perfect piece of inspiration, I laughed, I cried (this happens quite a lot with writing as good as this...) I think I needed to hear it.
Make Good Art? OK then, I will
Make Good Art? OK then, I will
This short little book is important.
It is both what I always need to hear and what I always want to say.
Ideas matter. Reading matters. Stories matter. Art matters. Your work matters. Your unique identity and contributions matter.
Make mistakes, and make good art.
Read, and help others read.
Believe in the importance of your ideas and your creations. And be open to others’ as well.
I listened to this on audio, as I have with other books from the author...and I can’t tell you how much I love listening to Neil Gaiman speak. I’m so glad he narrates his own books. ❤️ He brings his work to life in such a special way.
