Excellent work and lovely illustrations

Short but lovely.

If you love reading and art, and the process of making any kind of art, you will love this book. Both text and illustrations are stunning and inspiring.

Pretty much what you'd expect. I'd say that Gaiman's landmark speech, "Make Good Art", is that much more stirring while reading it. Riddell's illustrations make for some fun exploration and add some layers to the reader's perception of Gaiman's words. All-in-all, a good book. Nothing to rush to the bookstore for.

Oh I loved this. It's short, but wow he packs a lot of gems in here. A timely read.
I again chose the audiobook from the library to hear him read it and am glad I did.

A nice, pick-me-up read. It takes no time to read through, but it's a nice dose of motivation to keep on creating what you like to create.

Every once in a great while the right book comes along for the right person, at the right time; this is that book for me.

Very inspiring!

“Sometimes the way to do what you hope to do will be clear cut, and sometimes it will be almost impossible to decide whether or not you are doing the correct thing, because you’ll have to balance your goals and hopes with feeding yourself, paying debts, finding work, settling for what you can get.”

Gaiman hits the nail on the head when it comes to struggling with wanting to make art but balancing ‘normal’ life along the way.
Truly a recommendation for everyone who makes art.

And a bonus: the dude wrote Coraline!

This is a very short read. I think there are some very nice statements in this little book but at this point in my life is a lot of common sense. I do think remembering to stay inquisitive and creative throughout life is important but yeah.

With the first few pages under my belt, I started to wonder if this book was "really" what I was hoping for and/or expecting. After finishing, it turns out Art Matters was simply different than I expected and wonderful anyway. I read this as a one-sitter @ the library but would love to have a copy handy whenever I need a heart-boost at home or in my purse, out and about in this wide, wild universe.

"And remember that whatever discipline you are in, whether you are a musician or a photographer, a fine artist or a cartoonist, a writer, a dancer, a designer, whatever you do, you have one thing that's unique: You have the ability to make art. And for me, and for so many of the people I have known, that's been a lifesaver. The ultimate lifesaver. It gets you through good times and it gets you through the other ones."
