A lovely manifesto, perfect for starting a new year.

“Whatever you do, you have one thing that's unique. You have the ability to make art. And for me, and for so many of the people I have known, that's been a lifesaver. The ultimate lifesaver. It gets you through good times and it gets you through the other ones.”
― Neil Gaiman, Art Matters: Because Your Imagination Can Change the World

"Art Matters" is a collection of musings and personal essays by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman, accompanied by the whimsical illustrations of Chris Riddell.

In the first part of the book he talks about how ideas are subjective and uncontrollable. ‘Ideas spring up where you do not except them, like weeds, and are as difficult to control.’ He says that ideas can be subjective in the sense that someone might think something is right while someone else might find the same idea downright preposterous; that in the end, in the battle of guns and ideas, ideas will eventually win, because ideas are invisible. They can be written on the walls in the dead of the night. They can be drawn.

In the second part he talks about the importance of libraries and reading. He talks about the need to imbibe the reading habit in kids from a very young age. The fact that everyone should be able to live and think beyond the world we are existing in. To expand our imagination and sow the seeds of empathy within us by reading fiction. That books are a way to communicate with the dead, to learn lessons from those who are no longer with us, that knowledge is incremental.

In the third part he talks about art and creativity in general. He precisely talks about his journey as a writer, from being a school dropout to becoming a best-selling author and screenwriter. He talks about the uncertainty of a career in the arts because it’s a rare profession. That many people who are enthusiastic about a career in the creative field drop out of it as they have goals of feeding themselves, paying debts, and settling down. He reinstates that pursuing a creative journey has its own sets of struggles but all that you can do to get out of the rut is to ‘make good art’. If you are an artist, you will definitely resonate with this part of the book!

Reading this one was a wholesome experience. It is the kind of book you come back to for inspiration and gain new perspective!
