Wow! The inspiration that pours out of these pages is phenomenal! Thank you Neil Gaiman for your wise words and encouragement to make art. I will be rereading this, over and over, whenever I need the reminder to keep going and to create.

Is there anything revolutionary in here? Not a bit.
Will I be referencing this when I need a friendly kick in the pants? For sure

This little book is timeless and I’m definitely going to turn to it again when I’m in need of inspiration or feeling down about my own work.
In Art Matters, Neil Gaiman says that creating art really is about embracing the weird and unusual; it’s about self-acceptable and creating your own individualism from the unique parts of yourself and your creativity. This book serves as a reminder that beautiful things can come from your own insecurities and that every failure is a lesson learned and knowledge gained to move forward.
This isn’t a preachy book about how to obtain your creative goals; it’s full of inspiring truth and realistic confessions of how hard you have to work to get where you want to be, while also detailing how easy it can be to stumble upon great things (because sometimes that’s how life works, right?) Gaiman and Riddell have probably been through the same struggles any budding authors/artists/musicians etc have been through, and come out the other side with great success.
Riddell’s illustrations in this book are gorgeous. They’re detailed without being perfectly neat and that’s why I adore his style.
