Now that this series is over, I can say that I enjoyed every page, I was gripped by the social and philosophical issues it explored, and I felt the pain of each character forced to make tragic choices and lose part of herself or himself along the way. On the other hand, I never grasped the sciences of sesuna, orogeny, or magic well enough to tell whether or not the it completely made sense. I think the series succeeds more as a magnificent myth cycle and less as science fiction. Someday, though, I will reread it with familiarity to let me look for the ways the science is revealed along the way.

Jemisin is the worthy successor of Octavia Butler, Ursula LeGuin, and Homer.

The ending gave me satisfaction, even if it was somewhat sad. I genuinely loved this series, and while I'm not normally a big sci-fi person, this book tickled my brain with all of the rock/geology references. Also loved how Hoa and Essun end up together.

Also - insane quote from N.K. Jeminsin in this book...

"I think, that if you love someone, you don't get to choose how they love you back" (followed by a rock reference lol) "So many layers in the strata of that statement"

This trilogy was one of the most original, emotional, fascinating pieces of sci-fi/fantasy I’ve read. The worldbuilding is unmatched, the characters fully rendered and complex, the narrative structure surprising without being gimmicky. Highly highly recommend!!

This was more like a 3.5 stars. Something about this fell flat after the greatness that was the first books
