Vincent, Viscount Darleigh, was blinded in battle during the Napoleonic Wars. He is much loved and well looked after, but...smothered. His mother and sisters treat him like an invalid - a well loved invalid, but an invalid nonetheless. When they find a bride to look after him, he runs.

Sophia is nobody, just a quiet mouse of a girl. Nobody expects much of anything from her, but she can't bear to watch Vincent lured into compromising her vicious, superficial cousin. What will happen when Sophia dares to intervene?

I especially liked the emotion. I cried. It was so well told, and so well scripted that I couldn't help but be swept away.

I loved that the author never tried to suggest that Vincent's sight would come back. I loved that the author never pretended the heroine was actually a beauty all along.

This was the second of the Survivors' Club series, and I'm already reading the third. In a world where no one writes historical romance the way I like it anymore (all my favorite writers have retired), I am thankful for the comfort that a book like this provides. Well written, nothing jarring or out of time, and a heroine I empathized with. There's even a cat!

Huzzah.

Too sweet and low conflict for me.

I received this book as a first read and have to disclose my bias: Mary Balogh is one of my favorite authors, so I was beyond excited to get this book. That said, I also have to admit it always takes me awhile to open a Balogh book. Her style is sweet, well-written and focused on character development which always feels like fresh air when compared to high action romances with tons of sex or drama. This one was no exception.

The Arrangement is the gentle story of 2 damaged people come together out of necessity and fall in love after their marriage. It's trademark Balogh style where very little is said to demonstrate love. Instead it's shown,so you feel the characters falling in love even when they aren't aware of it. The only reason why I gave this one 4 stars instead of 5 is that the end felt very abrupt for me. Part of that is smallness of the event she used as a climax, but even more so the event that was used as the closer. It was a sweet activity that I anticipated thanks to foreshadowing earlier in the book. A minor issue that didn't prevent me from closing the book with a smile on my face.

A light and enjoyable read. No real conflict since Vincent and Sophia are such sweethearts. Overall kind of bland but I don't regret spending my time reading it. The characterizations weren't quite there for me or I think I would have liked it more.
