I liked this book (#2) better than the first. Kind, warm-hearted, sympathetic main characters. And I love how Vincent (the gorgeous hero who happens to be blind) was able to ‘see’ Sophie as beautiful. One of those books where they bring out the best in each other.

Why did it take me so long to find Mary Balogh? There is something so authentic and natural in her writing. And, in every book I've read of hers, this core of sweet, sweet sorrow. I am hardly ever brought to tears by books - Mary Balogh manages to write characters that make me feel so sad for them, I feel tears pricking the corners of my eyes.

That may not be a good sell for romance readers, but this quality makes Mary Balogh's books far above the average romance. She writes broken characters - emotionally and physically - that find healing inside themselves and in their lovers. I saw another review that called Balogh's books lovely - they are simply, beautifully, lovely.

This one is not a five star for me, because it didn't feel as...deep? as the others? I'm not sure. I read another Survivor's Club novel without realizing it, then got this one from the library...going to try to read them in order from now on.

4.5 stars. I didn't think any in this series would be as good as "The Proposal" but this one proved me wrong. I couldn't put it down. I thought Vincent charming in The Proposal but didn't imagine him as a strong, leading man, so I was curious as to how Mary Balogh would feature him in his own story. Well, strong leading man he definitely is! And Sophia was equally endearing and compelling.

Now the bar has been set incredibly high for the other Survivor's Club members!

Some overall thoughts on MB's Survivor series: This series is just so tender — as veterans from the Napoleonic War, they all struggle with wounds (both visible and invisible) and Balough's treatment of this in the context of masculinity was straight-up beautiful. LOVED this series and will definitely be reading it again in the future.
