Until about halfway in I didn’t *hate* it. But by then even the pictures couldn’t save it.

littered with right wing propaganda, primarily in the form of transphobia. sprinkle in some casual fatphobia, racism, and religious bigotry, and you have this book.

i’m now convinced booktok, especially the horror side of it, either don’t read the books they promote or they severely lack reading comprehension skills. everyone’s more obsessed with how “wOw fUcKed uP!!! 🥴” something is in terms of gore and jump-scares over the actual problematic shit in this book. bonkers, really, since so many horrortok creators are left-leaning and lgbtq+.

It had a lot of promise but just had too many plot contrivances and required too much suspension of disbelief for me. The pictures were a lot of fun though

DNF @29% This book bounces from microaggressions to flat out racism, transphobia, fat shaming, and it's laced with right wing values. These elements don't provide any societal commentary. They're unnecessary and I found reading this book to be extremely uncomfortable.

This book is entertaining enough if read mindlessly, but it’s deeply problematic on multiple fronts (transphobic, fatphobic, contains unchallenged racist stereotypes, has an extremely misconstrued view of sex education for children etc.) cannot recommend and am really shocked by how many readers are missing it’s clearly anti-leftist, far-right/conservative dog whistles & agenda.

Adding to my review a year in hindsight and after much discussion with my bookclub. This was such a fun read but the ending is so transphobic is undoes all of the stuff before it. A shame the author also like to shout out JK Rowling. A good premise that is let down by the ending.

There were things I hated about this book, but I still couldn’t stop listening so can’t knock it down too much. I definitely didn’t guess the major plot twist like some other readers did. Had more of a YA feel than adult.

Hated: transphobia, religious commentary, plot holes, irritating narrator, fatphobia

I thought it would have been interesting if the twist was that the whole thing was based on an unreliable narrator.

Other than what’s mentioned in “hated,” the writing was decent and I did want to figure out what the hell was going on.
