Immediately this book felt, well, cringe. It's overly crass and lewd, and it doesn't do anything for the character or story other than be crass and lewd for the sake of it or for shock factor. The author often writes in a way that feels like she used a thesaurus to make every sentence seem more intellectual, using overly complicated sentences constantly so make the character seem smarter than everyone else. But unfortunately Maeve doesn't come off smarter than everyone else. She just comes off as annoying and as a stereotypical "not like other girls" type of girl. Almost all of her inner thoughts are filled with how much better she is than everyone else. Everyone else is vapid and stupid, but all she thinks about is how she compares to everyone else.
I literally rolled my eyes at the, "Hello Mr Bateman" line. And again at her singing to Liz and Andre.
I think a true psychopath wouldn't constantly have to convince themselves and everyone else that's they're a psychopath, they wouldn't be so try-hard to force it down everyone's throats constantly.
The Liz scene was super drawn out, the speech felt 3x longer than it needed to be, so by the end any ick factor I had by what she was planning to do was dampened and I was bored and basically skimming the rest of that chapter.
Also every single kill she committed she would've been caught for. There was an obvious trail left behind everywhere she went. It would've taken minimal detective work for her to be a suspect in every single crime in the book.
Furthermore, any time she killed or hurt a woman she was sexually assaulting and torturing them. For trying to be a misandrist her internalized misogyny reared its head at every moment.
I did finish the book because I thought the plot itself was interesting. But the main character was just so try-hard, it made her feel un-genuine and annoying.

I really wanted this to be a "good for her" horror, but Maeve was insufferable at times and I struggled to cheer her on.
Not bad for my first taste of splatterpunk and maybe one that may lend itself to a solid adaptation.
Unfortunately, I feel like this book will be forgettable tho.

Ma, soprattutto, Maeve è diversa.
Lei non guarda la vita scorrere come fanno le altre persone, lei non partecipa a quella rumorosa fiumana dell’esistenza umana… lei osserva con occhio critico, feroce, da predatrice.
E come predatrice non ha alcun bisogno di scuse per iniziare a cacciare.
Nessun trauma pregresso, nessuna scusante, nessuna motivazione.
Lei fa quel che fa perché è nella sua natura – e, in fin dei conti, nessuno ha mai vagliato così profondamente i turbamenti nell’animo di Patrick Bateman, mentre questo uccideva, quindi perché dovremmo farlo per Maeve?
Diciamo subito l’ovvio: se vi danno fastidio le scene sanguinolente, questo libro non fa per voi.
Ce ne sono un paio fortine.
Se però non vi fate turbare da un po’ di sangue, posso dire che vi troverete di fronte un libro stranamente contemplativo e, se siete donne, anche liberatorio.
Alle donne viene sempre richiesto un certo quantitativo di pupù da ingoiare, prima di poter essere libere di agire o reagire – e anche in quel caso non è detto che si abbia questa “autorizzazione”.
Maeve, invece, se ne frega altamente di quello che la società richiede, impone, consiglia a lei in quanto donna.
Il libro ci offre anche una prospettiva sopraelevata, un punto di vista interessante su molte cose. A tratti asettico, perché Maeve non è circondata da una vita che potrà davvero vivere e ne è più che consapevole anche perché quando da piccola ha provato ad essere come tutti gli altri non è andata bene, e proprio perché asettico mi è piaciuto molto; ho trovato in queste pagine delle osservazioni sulla vita e sul mondo che non mi erano nuove, di certo, ma che ho apprezzato parecchio perché mi sono sentita meno sola in un certo senso.
