This book was beautiful and heartwarming. It cemented Becky Chambers as one of my favorite authors.

Super fun. The kind of sci-fi you might love the heck out of even if you're a person who doesn't habitually read sci-fi (but perhaps enjoy the occasional sci-fi TV show). Character driven, not very fighty, not all about politics.
Bonus points for some good representation. 4 stars for me rather than 5 because it occasionally felt more like a Tumblr essay/fanfic demo of "look how easy it is to have better representation" than a novel. Looking forward to reading the next one!

Felt like two different books in one. In one book, a great tale of a journey and a tight crew through various adventures. I loved that book. Woven through that was another book about humanity. Whilst that was fairly good, it didn't always sit well alongside the main tale. At parts, the second book seemed to be shoe-horned in and disrupted the flow of the main story.

I did find myself visualising the whole of the Wayfarer and each crew member. The detail painted by Chambers was superb.

So cleverly and intricately imagined, this universe and its people feel so real it's like I could reach out and touch them. Sensitive, inclusive, heart warming and heart wrenching. The galactic stakes aren't that large, but the stakes are huge for our found family, and that makes this cozy, intense, and lovingly detailed story so much more than than a simple story.

Nothing is more important than the family you choose and surround yourself with.
