I just loved this so much. I don't have a proper review for it but I loved it. The found-family character-centric space odyssey I didn't know I needed.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet was absolutely delightful!

There’s a joke that in fantasy books the travel gets skipped, and in sci-fi the whole book is the travel, and that was definitely the case for this book! It’s a very long way to get to the small, angry planet, and the the hijinks that occur along the way are what made this book so enjoyable.

The Wayfarer crew was so lovely to read about! Their struggles and celebrations felt so real, and it was a pleasure to learn about the universe they live in through their experiences. I will definitely be continuing this series. 4 stars.

Becky Chambers uses in her book every knowledge about TV Series structure, and doing that, she captured the current Zeitgeist, because "The Long Way..." feels more like a text-based version of a Netflix dramedy, than a novel.

In spite of over-the-top dramatic clichés had been thrown here and there, despite the life-threatening situations the characters find themselves into, no fundamental changes happen to them.

Because of such assumptions, towards the end of the novel, there is a feeling that everything that was read was not taken seriously.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is the best book I've read in 2024. Just like with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," I'll never forgive myself for dismissing science fiction for years just because of one early dislike when I was a 11 years old.

I was determined that if I was going to commit to a longer series in a genre I wasn't very fond of, it had to be written by Becky Chambers. All the hype surrounding this book is absolutely warranted, although in my circles, it's almost criminally underrated and overlooked. I'll be recommending The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet to anyone and everyone for the rest of my days.

If you're looking for a scathing critique of power abuse, read this book. Need a heartwarming story about found family in the midst of chaos? Read this book. Want to see LGBTQ+ representation done right? Read this book. And the plot? It's woven together with such clever wit,  it'll keep you enthralled from start to finish- READ THIS BOOK!!!

Set in a possible near future where the elites have fled to Mars, leaving the rest of humanity, now known as exodans, to fend for themselves in space, the story follows a Martian runaway who joins Ashby's crew as a clerk. Through her journey, we see how the characters grapple with their pasts and their roles in shaping the universe. As Dr. Chef puts it, "The universe is what we make of it. It’s up to you to decide what part you will play."

Chambers tackles tough topics like power dynamics, imperialism, and the enduring effects of war. "People can do terrible things when they feel safe and powerful." These themes are seamlessly integrated into the narrative, prompting readers to ponder their own roles in shaping society. This book hit me on a deeply emotional level. It's a testament to Chambers' as a writer and her ability to craft stories that stay with you long after you've turned the final page. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet isn't just a sci-fi novel—it's a journey of self-discovery and a reminder that our choices shape the world around us.
