Emmy Jackson is an Instagram influencer who goes by Mamabare. She posts all the time, giving vague but enthusiastic advice like, “you’ve got this, mama!” Her account is scattered with photos of her daughter Coco pretending to have fun and sponsored ads pushing toilet paper brands. Her husband Dan is an author who hasn’t published anything in eight years.

Let me just say this: I knew I wouldn’t like either Emmy or Dan as soon as I learned that their kids are named Coco and Bear. They’re both terrible people. Emmy is horrible because her account is a huge lie and she has no problem putting her kids at risk for her fame. Dan is horrible because he calls himself an author even though he doesn’t write and whines to his wife 24/7 even though he’s only contributed maybe $10 to their finances in eight years and doesn’t do late night feeds.

I don’t mind horrible main characters but the villain was hard to sympathize with. The ending was so anti-climactic and almost unbelievable. I am sitting wondering to myself, “What was even the point of that?” Otherwise though, I liked the premise and the plot was creative. I would probably give the authors another chance!

This book explored the exploitive nature of families online. We follow a mother who runs an Instagram account documenting her life as a mother of two children. The catch is she isn't very truthful and plays up for the camera to gain popularity and be relatable. We also get the point of view of her husband a writer who is trying to write his second book. He is wary of putting their kids online and has suggested this to his wife. Lastly we have the point of view of a stalker we don't know who this is and leaves you guessing throughout the book which I really liked. The Stalker has had a past with the mother and now wants revenge and will go to extreme lengths to do so. Overall, this is a really good book, and one of its kind. I felt the writing was quite wooden at times, this may have been due to the authors info dumping about social media.
