I am more glad that I finished this book than that I read it at all. It is grotesque and disturbing, and I was almost constantly nauseated reading it. It wasn’t a positive experience, but it was an amazingly woven tapestry, spanning decades and dimensions, impressively coming together bit by bit. Heed my warning though: gross.

A ghosty revenge tale with history, local spirits, and the rage and ennui of young women and girls? Yes please. I enjoyed piecing together what was going on and felt the characters, times, and supernatural elements were deftly woven together. I found it well written and emotionally engaging. Only drawback was due to the number of characters I felt the character development could have been stronger. All in all a great read (do mind the content warnings though).

Fantastic debut! After finding out this book made the womens prize 2022 longlist and reading the blurb, I found the premise intriguing, it didn't dissapoint. Elements of magical realism throughout made the twists and turns more fantastical. I did find the integrated time periods confusing, hence a 4 star rating. Loved the subtly of characters mentioned throughout the different time periods too link the relevance between the storylines and backstories. I also learnt about Vietnams's history. Would recommend and will keep an eye out for future releases from Violet.

Creepy but gripping.

I don't usually do horror but this is more creepy than horrific and has enough of a realist plot to grab non horror fans. I couldn't stop reading.
