Really well written. Keeps you reading even though the pace is slow and the plot extremely depressing.

There's nothing happy or hopeful about this story, and the layers of oppression and injustice remain virtually unchanged almost a century later.

A beautifully written masterpiece written in the 1940s, but could have very well been written today. It's frightening how many aspects I can relate to, realizing that much hasn't changed in the last 80 years or so.

I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus. Unsure how to rate at this moment in time.

A clear, well-written slice of life of a single black mother in 1940s NYC. The mundane, oppressing realities of poverty and discrimination are shown without becoming trauma porn. Characters are fleshed out and the tragedy comes from the intersection and contradiction of each individual's desires.
