this and the queen of nothing are my favourite books in the folk of the air series!!

4.75! SOOO GOOD! oak is such an unbelievably compelling character but i’m still not connecting with wren unfortunately! if there’s any way holly black is reading this review btw, i need the book about jude and cardan going to the contest in the undersea like i need the air i breathe.

Okay, nakabawi si ghorl dinhing dapita. Nice ang character development, and the plot twist after by plot twist that I missed. Therefore, 4.5 stars.

I think in the past when I read Jude & Cardan’s story I was post TOG so therefore it felt so juvenile and weak. However two years later finishing the Novels of Elfhame duology, I’ve come to respect and enjoy how whimsical and fantastical she makes her characters/stories. It’s so unlike what already out there. I really enjoyed this story with Oak and Wren; like truly that was a well written book with a lot of political intrigue and slow burn romance. All in all a great book

I actually really enjoyed this - much more than I thought I was going to! Looooved reading this from Oak’s point of view, he was a little confusing in the first book, so this really made me like his character.
Having Wren be so mysterious for this one was such a good idea, she was our narrator in the first one, so like Oak, I thought I knew her - but her actions were saying something else! Just all very cleverly done!
A lovely ending as well, and a perfect sprinkle of Carden and Jude in it!

This book was a weird one for me to rate because the more I think of it the more I disliked The Stolen Heir. Despite liking Oak's point of view in this one, I somehow didn't like it as much as the first one. The political intrigue and the betrayals and the action in this one succeeded on a different level than the previous book, but the relationship and dialogue and romance suffered for it.

I didn't feel as connected to the characters in this series as I would've liked and to be honest Oak is just a confusing character for me. He often contradicts himself and his actions go so many different ways that I had a hard time deciding if I could like him or not. He didn't really seem to know who he truly was.

I also had a hard time believing that Suren and Oak had any kinds of feelings for each other whatsoever because their few interactions in this book were so overshadowed by the politics and action.

The small amounts of Jude and Cardan we were able to get saved the book for me as we were able to get insight into their rule as High King and High Queen as well as how their relationship has evolved. Overall, not my favorite and honestly a little disappointed.
