I was trying not to be bitter, but I’m genetically wired that way. It’s in my DNA, right next to punctuality and a love of chocolate.
I got a rec for this book when I was searching for something to fill the hole left by Charlie Adhara’s amazign Big Bad Wolf series, and it definitely scratched the same itch. The vibes are different, but it’s also a great mix of romance and paranormal mystery.
I absolutely loved Rain as the protagonist and narrator: his self-deprecating snarkiness, his struggle to coming to terms with the whole ghosts thing, even his cowardice about feelings—because of the way he overcomes it over the course of the story. Danny took longer to grow on me, mainly because of how trigger-happy he was when it came to the detective work and the mixed signals he sent at the start. But I came to understand him and find him a fascinating character as I read. Funny thing, normally I prefer dual POV in my romance, but in this case, I feel like sticking to Rain's viewpoint and showing Danny through his eyes really added to the story rather than detracting from it in any way.
The romance itself is second chance done exactly right, or at least exactly how I like it. Something that really calls to me. The reasons why these two didn't work out the first time around were made clear early on, just like the fact that they still mattered to each other and that each of them had his own narrative of how it all went wrong. At the same time, practically from the first reunion scene, it was easy to see how good they could be for each other if they figured out a way to merge those two narratives and move forward in sync. The "one step forward, two steps back" dance was awesomely done, the chemistry was through the roof, and the confusion of slipping back into the life that used to be home to find it subtly different but no less appealing was beautifully conveyed. I loved how the snark of it all co-existed with moments of rough introspection on Rain's part.
The mystery plot was pretty well done, too: it kept me guessing for long enough, and damn, that final extended interaction with the villain was tense. If inclined, I could nitpick a few parts about the last third of the book or so: there was definitely a moment where the mystery plot slogged a little, as well as a couple of points where the different plot threads—the romance, the mystery, the ghosts, Rain's relationship with his family—got fanned out a bit too much. It all came together again really well in the end, though, so those small bumps in the road did absolutely nothing to lessen my overall enjoyment. Honestly, I barely thought of them in the moment, thoroughly distracted by all the cool snarky dialogue and the feels.
The ghost lore seems super interesting, but it's also very clearly just being set up for the future books, with plenty yet to reveal. The ending suggests that the very next installment might dive way deeper into those esoteric things, and so I'm really excited to pick it up soon.

4.5 Stars!
Suffice it to say, this was a major win.
-Taciturn stubborn law enforcement guys.
-Uber alpha ex who knows just how to give it like you love it.
-Hurt burbling under the surface, regret that weighs so heavily.
-Slow burn second chance oh so fucking sexy, I can’t even. Unf unf unf!
Per the blurb, FBI agent Rain, returns to his hometown, not of his own volition but because he made the mistake of actually letting it be known that he can see ghosts. In an effort to show he's “well” again after a forced leave of absence, Rain’s tasked to help the local police’s cold case department, one in which his ex works for. He and Danny had it good, but they both held many things back such as Rain’s special ability and Danny's own sad past. Will Rain’s return be the opportunity to finally forgive and move on together, to actually be vulnerable and trust each other with their fears and secrets?
In and amongst the serious parts and trying to find answers to an unsolved murder, there’s so much wit and sarcasm throughout, all of which was a welcome reprieve to the darker moments. Oh and did I mention this was sexy?
I’m not typically for the ghostly set up against a realistic background, but Harmon won me over with the Rules of Possession series so I had no choice but to check this out. I enjoyed this immensely, and I’m ecstatic to learn Harmon plans on a sequel. I’ll be first in line.

Great concept for a book, poor execution. Sex scenes were good, but otherwise the writing was poor and in desperate need of an editor. There were several times where there were obvious plot inconsistencies within a single page - the type of stuff that couldve been caught with even a basic re-read. The characterisation of the two leads was wildly inconsistent and without explaination. In particular, I was never able to sort out the motivations/personality of the non-POV character (Danny). The dialog was odd - sometimes they spoke like American millenials (which would make sense), other times they sounded like 70 year olds or used slang from the UK. Finally the "rules" of this paranormal world were unclear, which would be fine if the author didnt invent new paranormal powers for the characters whenever it was convenient for the plot.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a perfect blend of criminals minds, ghost whisperer, and a mm second chance romance.
This had a great plot and was well paced. The on page spice was the perfect amount. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

I dare you to read this book (or listen to it, as I did the 2nd time around) and not become an instant fan. An intriguing story, one brilliant FBI profiler and a hot-as-hell detective, their second chance to make their relationship work while solving a cold case, fantastic humor, sizzling chemistry and a handful of ghosts make this an extremely entertaining read.
Rain Christiansen is trying to turn his life around … or more like turn it back to normal when he could still ignore the pesky ghosts hanging around him. When he travels back to his hometown after being away for a few years and reunites with his ex to solve the disappearance of a young girl, those paranormal visitors of his just won’t quit. So this time around he decides to use them and see where they take him. Same with his undeniable attraction to Detective Daniel McKenna … denying it never worked so where does this leave them now? The mystery part of this story was so interesting, I was dying to know (pun intended) who the killer was, and although I had a few guesses I could not pinpoint for sure til it was revealed. I enjoyed Rain’s humor, swooned over Danny (honestly, they are just perfect for each other!), and loved to get to know Rain’s eccentric family as well. This was one of those books that I did want to savor but also had a tough time putting down. Absolutely do not wait another moment to start this series, you will not regret it at all!

This was a really fun read! Rain Christiansen is an FBI Profiler and a reluctant medium who can talk to ghosts. When he does one of his ghosts a favour and passes a message onto their family, he is immediately removed from active duty on the grounds of ‘mental instability’ and moved to the cold case squad in his home town in Florida. Here he ends up working with his ex, sexy agent Danny McKenna, trying to solve the case of a missing teenage girl. Helped by her ghost, and a whole cadre of other spooky visitors, he works with Danny to help solve the case… as well as rekindling his lost love.
This book was really fun (although I did call the murderer quite early on!) and had a lot of laugh out loud moments. The only reason that it didn’t get 5 start from me is I simply didn’t bond with either of the MCs - Rain is the sole narrator and I found him quite annoying (although that’s very much my personal opinion, I know a lot of people love him!) and Danny was just very hung-ho and gun toting… he spends a lot of time threatening victims and witnesses and okay, it gets results but also… idk. Maybe if you’re in law enforcement, don’t do that? Rain had to rein him in a few times and it was a bit much.
Overall it was a good read and I may come back to the series, just to see if Danny chills out at all 🤣
