An enjoyable read. I didn't want to put this down. The entire book is from one characters perspective and even he gives the reader a surprise at one point. But the book isn't overly memorable. It's a good mystery but the supporting cast was lackluster and the main characters weren't interesting enough to carry this through. This is a plot driven book, even with the character depth and growth.

This book had ghosts, a cold-case team made of likable characters, and some steam. All things I enjoy immensely. But it did have something that I usually don’t love which is second chance romance

What I love about a romance is the pinning, the falling in love, the little things the characters learn about each other along the way (especially in plots/genres where romance isn’t the main focus. If I am going to care about the romance, I need to a reason to do so). With set ups like Rain and Danny… Their romance already happened off page, so even thought I’m told they are in love… I didn’t really get to see it.

As far as a thriller/mystery I did enjoy this book and I will be listening to the next in the series via audiobook (I read the print of this one) as I am interested in the ghost whisperer/agent team that will be playing a part in the future!

(If you are a fan of a romance/ thriller crime combo I do really recommend Quine and Costa Series. The author did a fantastic job of balancing the romance with the thriller/crime genre.)

I liked Rain and Danny together and I was invested in their relationship, but I could not take Rain seriously as an FBI agent and Danny didn't seem like a great cop either. They're both so unprofessional and treat witnesses and people of interest in the investigation like they're amateurs instead of the trained agents of the law they're supposed to be.

I ended up skimming part of the investigation because after reading half of the book I kept getting bored. The ghost side of things was also unexpectedly dull and frustrating. There's some inconsistencies in the way they behave and the main ghost, Ethan, got on my nerves constantly. I understand ghosts are going to be frustrated with their situation, but so many of their conversations with Danny went something like this:
"tell my parents you see my ghost and that I'm at peace"
"I've tried and I nearly lost my job because people think I'm having hallucinations"
"so what? go talk to them"
"they don't believe me, please leave me alone"
"why don't you want to help me? fuck you"

There's a point where Rain acts equally frustrating with Danny. He tells him where to find some bodies and Danny seems to believe him, but he rightfully points out he needs some kind of evidence to justify why he would even look there, only for Rain to get pissed off and act like that's unreasonable. I just can't stand when characters suddenly turn into irrational morons for the sake of having a fight and adding forced tension to the story.

Another thing that didn't help Rain's character is that he came across as selfish. I felt like he actually loved Danny, but there wasn't much consideration towards his feelings. Rain left him after four years in a commited relationship, and when they meet again because of the investigation Danny is being all calm and cool, so what does Rain do? Be understanding of Danny's hurt and take his cues from him to make the situation as painless as possible? No, he gets pissy about Danny acting like he's moved on and provokes him, implying Danny might want to get back together and letting him know it's not going to happen. When Danny rightfully calls him out on it and tells him to get over himself Rain gets offended.

Danny was walking the line of bullying cop several times during the investigation, but I liked him when it was just him and Rain. I think I would like to read more about them together, but I'm not sure I want to go through another one of their investigations. The quirky, trying to be funny with constant quips narration style wasn't my favorite either. In the first chapter Rain thinks something like "I'm all blueberries and blackberries because sarcasm is my jam". That alone almost made me stop reading.

Well, this book was an absolute delight. I smiled and laughed the whole time. If you’re looking for a light paranormal/murder mystery/second chance romance all mixed in one, this is the book for you. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
