a deeply male gaze-y book, but still just so well written and paced
i don’t know how to describe this book or how to do it justice? you need to have read it to truly understand how it feels to read this book and be immersed in Kvothe’s story and this whole world. however, fair warning: you will finish this book feeling wildly unfulfilled. I have way more questions at the end of this book than i did starting or even half way through. literally nothing gets answered and you only get about 35% of his story. and i want to read the next one so bad because im so entranced by this whole book and story and the characters and everything but there IS NO THIRD BOOK so do i really want to do that to myself???? but also i cannot leave it here…
few books have given me the feeling or the full on immersive experience of truly living in a new world the way this book has. the second i picked it up i was transported and i feel like i lived there myself? like i could explain the entire setting and world to you as if i were from there? the writing is just THAT good. and it’s so well structured and planned and perfect?? like omg i cannot even describe it. i’m just so confused to the ending tho???? like the way it was the same sentence and all…. like huhhhhhh. but also i love kvothe and i want to know the rest of his story and how it all happens and i love him as a character and he’s so like perfect and god-like?? i just love characters like him, like he’s definitely got nothing in common with darrow but it’s the same vibe of like almighty??? and it’s just so impressive and intimidating and he has me rooting for him the whole way. ugh i just loved this EXPERIENCE bc idk what else to call it. this was genuinely phenomenal and i feel like not reading this is doing a disservice to yourself and your brain and your life. so yeah. basically i need to read the next book but i’ll also die if the third one doesn’t come out??? so what will i doooo

One of the best epic fantasy books I've read in 20 years. Fabulous writing and what a story!
Enjoyable. I did find the writing a bit "Young Adult"-ish for my liking, and wasn't particularly convinced by any of the female characters, they all seemed rather too perfect, but other than that, I liked it.

I could not put this book down. 722 pages in 5 days, and I already have Wise Man’s Fear in hand.
Incredible on all accounts: prose, world building, character building and development, etc etc.
This is masterful fiction. This is maybe the greatest story I have ever read - on par with even the classics and the masters of literature.
