Fin men något mild (läs tråkig) historia om London blitzen under andra världskriget. Händer inte speciellt mycket, men så var ju också vardagen.

4.5 Stars. Another World War Ii novel. This described, very well I think, what living in London with all of the bombing might have been like. Unrelenting! Warm story which includes real loss of loved ones, finding meaning in your life, working hard, giving yourself and others a break, and a bit of romance. Not to forget the power of stories (novels) and how they could bring people together.
6/2024:
Changed to 5 starts.
Two of my favorite quotes from the second read.
p. 196
"I confess, I felt rather foolish reading aloud like that." . . . .
(Mr. Evans) shook his head." Not foolish at all, Miss Bennett. You'll change this war yet." He tapped his blunt fingers on the cover of Middlemarch. "One book at a time."
p. 202
The rest of September passed with nightly bob raids and more afternoon attacks than not. Somehow, London adjusted.
After all, no one in the world had the spirit of the British. They could take it.
. . . .Nearly every person had two jobs now. The ones they operated by day and the ones they volunteered for by night, whether putting out fires, watching for bombs, searching through the rubble for survivors or offering medical aid in the many various places it was needed - London came to life at night to help.

The most whimsical WWII novel I’ve ever read. Rationing and air raids played a part in this novel set in London, but it never felt like I was in the war.
