Took me a solid 150 pages to get into it and actually place the story but after that, I loved it, especially after a certain ✨element✨ was introduced. The author's note at the end, saying that she has done research into the topic and the premises of the book are based on real events, though the story and characters are fictional, makes it all the more haunting and upsetting.

This was an interesting book but far from what I would normally read. It was a little difficult to read, not just because the story itself was disturbing, but because of the voice in which it was written. I'm sure there would be some readers who would appreciate and love it, but it wasn't my cup of tea. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a galley of this book for review.

this one started off a bit slow and i thought i was going to regret starting it, but i ended up really getting sucked in. i was expecting it to become more of a story about women coming together + how life might be like (basically) without men, but i did find the witch trials interesting + obviously knowing the history of vardø now it makes sense. i think it explored the interesting aspects of witch trials from a very human perspective, ie how do people reach a point where theyre sending their neighbours to burn? although i read a lot of depressing books, i sort of wanted a happier ending, but i do appreciate that it wouldve felt unrealistic + there were still hopeful moments. overall i think it was well written with very 3 dimensional characters + (seemingly) a good grasp of the culture/time period, similar vibes to the song of achilles. wld recommend <3
