3.5/5 - I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, and her ability to create an atmosphere shone through. The word building overall was detailed without feeling overwhelming. The sections early on in the village, and then later in Vardohus, especially stood out in creating a very clear sense of place and atmosphere.
I also really enjoyed the pacing of the book (with the exception of the final few chapters/plot twist), and the progressive build-up of tension as the plot progressed.
What didn’t land as well for me was the character building. There were a lot of very interesting and compelling characters, on both sides, but apart from the main two protagonists most felt like they had a couple defining character traits but not much depth. I especially felt this regarding the other women of Vardo, whom Maren would have known for most of her life, like Kirsten, Diina, or Edne.
Still, an enjoyable book overall. And, on a personal note, really enjoyable to read something set in Norway and recognize location names.

everyone in the world should read this book right away!!!! i did not want it to end because it was so beautiful, but it was also so heartbreaking. it sheds light on the truth of a piece of history not a lot of people know about, and the characters were real and beautiful, so was the story. it provides empathy and care to women in a way not a lot of historical pieces do. i think this should be required reading, i hope this review will bring at last one person to read this story
