Second time reading this, now markedly older, and picked up on things I didn't necessarily get as a teen. This is a really cynical book and I love it. I love how bitter and judgemental Nick is, endlessly slagging off all the rich socialites around him, whilst also partaking in that same culture. It's interesting to see that now this book is reaching one hundred years old, it mirrors the same feelings of society that is being largely felt today. The upper class is so hedonistic and indifferent to the working class, and western civilisation as a whole seems to be crumbling—just as it essentially does at the end of the novel, when as Gatsby's funeral takes place, no one comes. This microcosm of high-society vanishes. They come for the parties and the booze and the socialising but, like parasites, jump to the next thing when the host is dead.
I love how unreliable Nick is too, like being utterly fascinated with Gatsby but also stating that he disapproved of him, how he finds himself in the bed of a man but glosses over that part, how he says he doesn't like to judge people, but judges people throughout.
I also love the writing style, it's just wonderful, and with it being such a short but potent read, I'm sure I'll revisit this again in the future.
