This is the first novel from the DS Cross series written by Tim Sullivan. We follow George Cross- a detective with Asperger’s- as he solves the case of the Carpenter murders. It is full of twists and turns and keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

I think the portrayal of Cross was perfect as it depicts the struggles of Asperger’s syndrome- particularly in a social interaction. But it also highlights that Cross’ brain works in an entirely different way to everyone else’s, and that’s how he cracked the case!

The writing style was straight forward and made for easy reading. The pace of the book, in my opinion, is medium and has some areas of suspense!

The reason why I’m giving this book 4 🌟 instead of 5 🌟 was because the actual story of “The Dentist” didn’t really start properly until chapter 12! However, with this being the first book in the series it is important to get all the background of the characters and the interactions, which is what the beginning chapters cover!

QOTD: have you read any good crime novels? What are your recommendations?

It’s been awhile since I’ve read this style of pulp fiction and it’s so satisfying. The autistic rep is possibly a reflection of its time, but it seems relatable to me (as an allistic, but surrounded by autistic folk) and the characters are endearing. I found the story predictable but that seemed to also be the point— it was good!
