im confused about why they made a movie out of a book that is almost entirely inner thoughts. i watched half of it a few months ago and forgot to go back to it. maybe ill do that and see what the dealio is !

It is a perfect ode to womanhood. It is melancholic and beautiful in a devastating way. I felt like I was being pushed out of my body while reading.

First read in early college and read regularly for a few years.

Upon re-reading in 2022, I think part of what enchanted me about this book originally was the joy shining through a sad story. I was young and had seen the movie (though I don't remember which I did first, watch the movie or read the book) and the melancholiness appealed to me. The winding together of women's stories is well done and it doesn't get particularly confusing, because they're such different women.

Fantastic representation of repressed and liberated queer women. Particularly enjoyed Clarissa and Laura's characters, I didn't really care for Virginia's story. Wish the foreshadowing was stronger so that plot twists had more of an "ohhhhhh" reaction than a "wait, what?"
