I absolutely love all of McCuller's work but this book started out as a bit of a mess, it seemed initially like 3 short stories that eventually came together in the last 2/3. That last 2/3 is fantastic and is while not her absolute best is still good enough that 99% of authors would sell their soul to have written it.

Really didn't come together for me until the end. Felt a little more whimsical than her other works while musing about death. Worth it for the last two chapters.
