When I've read the author's foreword, there is a subtle trigger warning in it. It interested me and i got curious to read this book. As the story goes i have my hunch about what the problem is. I kinda feel like a detective.

Brenna, i just wanna hug her, give her a protection that she doesn't have before. What she experienced was so upsetting, but she still stand strong. She was afraid but she fights that fear when she knows Michael will be always there beside her. And Michael, he is so gentle and patient with Brenna. He knows that he has to built Brenna's trust on him after he left her for 9 years at war.

I love this series so much. Grace Burrowes have picked some interesting plots.

Not my favorite of the series, but solid. The story is pretty dark, with more emphasis on that than the romance. I was a little thrown by how little of Michael’s scars came from 10 years of war.

Michael Brodie wed Brenna and then left the Highlands for war and was gone *checks notes* nine years?! Well, this is gonna be good. I know because I read books 1 and 2 and loved them, so…

Michael has been gone a long time. Longer than he really anticipated, but he was needed. Maybe one day he’ll share with Brenna all he’s been through. On the flip side, Brenna has also been through a lot and maybe one day she’ll share with Michael. Their marriage actually kinda depends on this mutual sharing if it’s going to survive.

This isn’t your typical historical romance. The couple are already married though they never did the deed. You know, the horizontal polka. *wink wink nudge nudge* They both have issues they need to share and work out. And Michael really needs to get up to speed as to what has been going on all these long years in his absence. Because Brenna should be respected among the tenants of their land and she is not.

Having read books 1 & 2 I was already familiar with Michael Brodie. The author writes a wonderful story with lots of detail and yet it’s no tedious slog. I love the characters and how they work things out instead of keeping secrets. Well, ok. Brenna does try to keep her secret but it eventually comes out. The villain of this story is quite disgusting. Trigger warning big time for child molestation. And that ending, whoa. If you like great characters working through a decent plot and a romance for the ages (and a Highland castle!) this should do the trick.

The Laird is the final book in the Captive Hearts series and I have to say it's my favorite of the three. Yes, I'm biased because a rugged Scottish laird in a kilt and the Highland setting always makes me happy. Michael and Brenna are married, but have spent no time together and their marriage is one his family does not want to continue. After years spent away at war, Michael returns with an additional title and a desire to begin a new life with Brenna.

After being left so long among people who didn't care for or trust her Brenna has to adjust to Michael's return and what it can mean for her. Michael has to work hard to gain Brenna's trust so that she knows that he will be there for her and demand that she be treated with the respect that she deserves. However, Brenna carries secrets of her own that could effect them all.

The Laird is going on my favorite reads list and I will definitely reach for a Grace Burrows book the next time that I need a historical romance fix. Burrowes is wonderful at creating a historical world to completely escape into. Descriptive scenery, well developed stories with heroes and heroines that are wonderfully developed seem to be a hallmark of Burrowes' writing. You can't go wrong with this series and The Laird was a wonderful conclusion.

Grace Burrowes writes hard books. This book is romangst but in a very good way. These books are all about survivors. The series starts with a survivor of torture, then the guilt of being a torturer and survivors guilt, finally we have a book which centers on surviving childhood sexual abuse. That's a big trigger, and it's implied in the forward,so I'm mentioning it up front. This book is heartbreaking, and powerful, but it's a story about hope and healing too.

Michael is a veteran returning home, to a wife he hasn't seen in 9 years. In his absence she has been running the castle and dealing with the tenants who will not accept her. The story is mostly about the two of them learning how to be in love. Michael's trauma from war gives him the emotional fluency to understand Brenna's trauma, and she needs him to love, but she doesn't need him to be a whole person. I liked that they weren't broken people who needed to be repaired.

There are no pointless plot Moppets, there are no moments in this book that are meaningless. Every word has intention. This is a wonderful book, but it isn't a joyful one, and only joyful books get 5 stars from me.
