Love Donna Leon' s Brunetti books especially since we went to Venice and I can now picture a lot of the places that she talks about. Can't believe that this one is number 28.

Another wonderful entry in this long-running series. The family dinner conversations get better and better, with the philosophical issues pinpointed and meaning far more than the crimes they illuminate.

There's something especially satisfying about a Commissario Brunetti novel, and this one doesn't disappoint. The book opens with Paola's wealthy and noble father asking Brunetti for a favor: to attend a dinner and observe an old friend of his. The Count is afraid that his old friend, Gonzalo, a retired art gallery owner (among other things) is making a big mistake. He has announced his plans to adopt a young man so that he can inherit his estate. Italian law requires that the estate go to family members. Gonzalo has never married and is estranged from his family because he was open about being gay at a very young age. Brunetti doesn't want to get involved, but he does. Then Gonzalo drops dead from natural causes. The adoption has taken place. There's nothing more that he can do. When an old friend from Germany as well as an old friend of Gonzalo's arrive in Venice to arrange a memorial service, things get interesting. Like her other books, this one has more twists and turns than you can imagine, plus snippets of the Brunetti family's daily life and Paola's wonderful cooking. I am already looking forward to the next one.
