5th/6th grade book club: this graphic novel was cute and touching and an important story of acceptance. Can’t wait to discuss it with my students later this week.

Really good. I appreciated her perspective on being a kid with differences, and how she fit it/didn't with other kids.
Also made me nostalgic for childhood -- little details like Afterschool specials, hostess fruit pies.

Cece Bell says that her intention in writing this book was to describe how she felt growing up as a member of the deaf community. The result is a graphic novel that can't quite decide what it wants to be, nor can it decide who its intended audience is. I had hoped for a book that would shed light on the struggles of people who are hard of hearing but instead I was left thinking only one thing about the entire story: ridiculous.

Really, really good. Heartfelt, bittersweet, funny, this is one that will resonate with kids. There are a ton of important lessons here but they're not imparted in a way that feels preachy. Instead, this is Cece Bell telling us what her life was like in an honest way with a graphic novel style similar to Raina Telgemeier. Thanks, ladies, for writing graphic novels of a different sort. Keep writing more of them.
To be honest, I'm not really sure how I feel about this. It was cute, but I never really connected to any of the characters...
Really sweet graphic novel, read for a children’s literature class
