AMAZING!
emotional funny hopeful inspiring medium-paced

Bell lost her hearing after having meningitis at 4. The memoir follows her experience through elementary school. Her hearing aids had cords that connected to a pack that she had to wear strapped to her chest. And, her teachers had to wear a microphone that was linked to the hearing aids to help her. What the teachers didn't realize was that she could still hear them when they left the room. Bell shares her difficulty in making friends and finding her comfort zone as a deaf person in regards to the hearing aids, learning to read lips and her resistance to sign language. She did a great job of conveying the feelings of frustration she often felt. And, she is nothing if not resilient and she had me completely absorbed.

I loved it! It is bound to be a darling of next week's youth media awards.

Graphic novels just aren't my thing. Great story and very well done though.
lighthearted medium-paced

This does a decent job of trying to represent HoH experience most especially of CeCe Bell as child. I do not appreciate the difference vs. disability treatment and the rejection of sign language, but that is the author's experience. I also struggle with the whole deaf equals superpower explanation as it is a difficult one that further individualizes disability instead of seeing a value in group connectedness. This was enjoyable. I would teach it.

Great book! An inclusive graphic novel for kids that shows one perspective of a girl who became deaf at a young age and how she grows up feeling different and navigates the same challenges as other kids, as well as different ones.

LOVED this one! It was so sweet and I got all teary eyed at the end. The last bit, the note from the author about deafness was perfect. The perfect ending to an amazingly sweet story. This is as good as everyone says. Made me so happy on so many levels.
