This book is one of the most heartwarming and beautiful tales of embracing your differences and celebrating yourself as you are that I have ever read.
Cece was a happy baby, ready to start school in a year, but she came down with a serious illness that resulted in a loss of hearing. Worried about starting school, Cece is reassured that she is no different when she starts class because her classroom is full of kids just like her!
However, her family moves to small town where she is worried not everyone will accept her, but her fears are quickly calmed as she makes friends and eventually shows her crush, Mike, her superpower, that she can hear EVERYTHING the teacher says and does.
The illustrations are just beautiful and capture exactly how Cece felt growing up as deaf child, through her initial insecurities and eventually her alter ego as El Deafo! I highly recommend this book. Easily one of the best graphic novels I have read.

Based on the author's childhood, this book is an interesting look at what it might be like to go deaf as a young child. She is careful to point out that her experiences are not the same as other deaf people.
The illustrations are cute and easy to read.

Would give this 4.5 stars if that were an option. Really enjoyed this one for many reasons.
I need to read more graphic novels-especially if they are like El Deafo! My students love GN's and we can't keep them on the shelves. This book was clever, funny and touching. It really gave you insight into how one deaf person grew up. Looking forward to reading many more of Cece's books in the future
I really appreciated this book's lessons of what things are helpful and detrimental when communicating with someone who has some level of deafness. The author also did a great job of channeling the feelings of a grade school kid. I enjoyed this quick read.
It doesn't have a main plot, the story keeps going, it is about life, real life. I like it a lot and I think it is a must read for children everywhere (for adults as well). It shows you how a kid with a disability (which becomes a super power, in a way) can feel and react to the behavior of others around her/him. It taught me to be careful on how I treat others. You might be trying to help someone and treat them special but they don't want to be special or not special in a certain way.
