Valentina LOVES Valentine's Day. That is until her grandmother visits and tells her the truth about her mother & explains that the family has always been unlucky in love. Now she must decide if it is better to take the risk, or make sure she NEVER falls in love so she can't get hurt.

Great storyline, diverse characters, and Beautiful Illustrations.

I am definitely purchasing this one for my HS library.

I got immersed in the story and the art was amazing!

3.5/5 stars. Love the representation of the Asian diaspora, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean. I’m a stickler about cultures and their languages being represented accurately, so things like misspellings bother me (example: Tết is spelled without both accents throughout the book despite other VN words spelled with accents, naming convention wasn’t last name first or consistent, etc). The most interesting dynamics in the story was not the romance or love triangle. I was most engaged in Valentina’s relationship with her dad, and with “Saint V.” The highlight was the VN grandma who was SPOT ON and friggin HILARIOUS.

Despite the title being about Lunar New Year, the graphic novel had more to do with Valentines Day. Overall a good, solid teen graphic novel despite its common high school tropes and predictable ending.
