This was a heartwarming (and heartbreaking) coming-of-age story that explored grief and abandonment. I was not expecting the spiritual and spooky elements but they served the story. I loved the Bay Area setting and seeing characters of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean heritage navigate cultural and generational differences. I appreciated that the main character, Valentina, had moments of self-doubt (like most of us do) but also had enough sense of worth to not allow others to shame her for things like not knowing the language of her ancestors. The story also hits differently as a parent. The writing showed the nuance of imperfect parents trying to do the best that they can without dismissing the impact of painful decisions. The artwork is captivating and after reading some interviews, I appreciated the intentional use of color for mood and cultural connection.
I was lucky enough to pick up this graphic novel at the Oakland Chinatown LNY Bazaar (which is even referenced in the story!). I've been a fan of Gene Luen Yang's work for several years and will be forever grateful that he took the time to chat with me and sign my copy. I will always treasure the portrait of my child that LeUyen Pham drew on the inside cover. This graphic novel would be a great addition to school and public libraries.
