Better than the movie. Not amazing, but fun.

I reread this for the first time as an adult, having only read it one other time as a 12 year old. It was fun rereading it as an adult, and doing it as a buddy read as well, but yikes this book is problematic. Red flags everywhere, Bella is so unlikable and annoying, and the writing can be so over-descriptive that it honestly takes you out of the story. As a reread/buddy read, it was enjoyable, but I think we can all agree that Twilight is definitely nothing to write home about.

18 year old me loved everything about Twilight. Apart from ‘The Vampire Diaries’, there wasn’t much else related to vampire's in the young adult genre.
The premise of the book was so appealing to young girls, that the fandom alone made the release of each book in the series more exciting.
I remember falling in love with Edward and the idea of him immediately. He was a tortured soul, doomed to walk the earth alone for centuries, until he met Bella.

It’s been criticised over the years for poor writing quality, but ‘Stephanie Mayer’ never tried to insinuate it was a sophisticated, complex book. For what ‘Twilight’ is (a teen romance book) it’s Perfectly good & has certainly maintained its popularity as a coming of age story.

A reread because of course I was all up in this series as a teen. Ya know, I didn't hate it this time. I'm reading through the lens of horror and it's kinda working for me. Of course it's angsty and dramatic but Bella is 17, I think we were all at least a little angsty and short-sighted around that age. Obviously I do not care for the promotion of toxic romantic relationships but I do think there's at least something to get out of this series. It's a cultural touchstone whether we like it or not.

I have always loved the Twilight movie, so I thought it was time to read the book, and I enjoyed it even more than the film! If someone made a 12-hour long adaptation that included every single detail from the novel, I would absolutely watch it. The tension as Bella and Edward get to know each other is enthralling, and their relationship by the end was flooding my heart with adoration for them and enthusiasm for their potential as a couple. Admittedly, I was disappointed by how relatively moody book-Edward was compared to his onscreen counterpart. It was challenging to witness his interactions with Bella while he was in a poor mood because, in my opinion, he could come off as condescending toward her. Also, the stalking was obviously not okay! However, Edward did seem to become kinder and more earnest in the final chapters. Further, I wish book-Bella would have exhibited more self-confidence throughout the story. Thus, I was very glad when, by the conclusion of the novel, she had enough self esteem to hold her ground and express her feelings when conversing with Edward. Yet, given their ages and the circumstances of their relationship, I can believe that those problems are fixable as the characters mature and build a stronger bond. Overall, I am thrilled that I finally read the Twilight book!
