One of the few stories where I think the movie does a better job than the novel. The motivation for Glass’ revenge (people stealing his stuff) is weak and uninspiring. Then, he spends an entire book surviving setback after setback to give the guy a flesh wound. Calling this a revenge story when it ends with the redemption and forgiveness it does just seems misleading. Watch the movie for the ending you expect and read the book for the ending that, albeit is rife with Christian symbolism, is really not that satisfying considering everything we went through as a reader.

This is the first full-fledged Western I've ever read and, holy sh*t, what a ride! I could have read the entire thing in one sitting if my life hadn't gotten in the way. It was intense from start to finish and I highly recommend that those wary of Westerns and/or bears give this one a try.

I listened to the audio book and really enjoyed it. I often have trouble with reader inflection but this one was really well done.

In 1823, a grizzly bear mauled Hugh Glass while he was on a trapping expedition in the Great Plains. The rest of his party, expecting him to die any time, abandoned him. His survival story is gripping, but Punke’s excursions into the fur trade and the lives of other characters make The Revenant a much richer, deeper reading experience.
