Reading this book was a rather numbing affair. Perhaps I'm just jealous I never found a key in my own father's things. Can anything good come out of death? This novel.

Parts of this book were very touching. Other parts were weird and at times seemed to be some sort of intellectual exercise. Overall, it's a good read and a unique reading experience, with blank pages, pages with one sentence on them, photos, corrected text, etc.

Parts of it reminded me of [b:The History of Love|3867|The History of Love|Nicole Krauss|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327911009s/3867.jpg|1882970] by [a:Nicole Krauss|2633|Nicole Krauss|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1285130428p2/2633.jpg], who, it turns out, it the author's wife.

I feel like I missed something with this book. It's rated so highly but I can't work out why, I really didn't feel anything about this book except mild frustration and annoyance at all the characters.

The characters had been through some terrible situations but I just couldn't find myself caring about them. It might be the way it was written with different character perspectives in different chapters without anyway of determining who it was until you've read a few paragraphs and worked out who it is.

This book also felt very long. It's not really but it took me forever to read and I felt like I was never getting anywhere. Can't say I'd recommend this book to anyone.

This was one of my favorite books in high-school for the sorrowful yearning it paired with love. All poetry and history and beautiful ideas, it was so much emotion tied up in a family across time. As an older person, I have more difficulty connecting to that emotion, feel it's a little too saccharine for reality, a little too best-selling and movie-optioned motivated.

This book hooked me from the first page. I thought that parts of it were absolutely brilliant, while other parts fell just a bit flat for me. Specifically, I loved Oskar's sections, while I was hot and cold with his grandmother's and grandfather's. Oskar felt so authentic; so heartbreakingly real. Overall, this is a great work of fiction, well-deserving of all of the praise.

This book was fantastic. The story was gripping and enjoyable and was written in a unique way.

I particularly enjoyed the different elements the author included - pictures, colours, different writing styles and viewpoints.

Overall, 5 stars from me.
