I was pleasantly surprised by this little mix of women's lit and cozy mystery. The four main women fit together well and I liked Nora's POV. A decent portion of the novel is about their budding friendship and willingness to trust each other, but I didn't feel it detracted from the mystery. I absolutely loved the focus on books throughout, with titles dropped like movie star names. I want one of Hester's scones and every time her bakery comes up I can smell the pastry.
The mystery was well done, the plot unpacked fine at the end and we get a little bit of the "what happened after" that some books leave out. I am usually wary of cozy mysteries as I can't stand an amateur sleuth doing silly, dangerous things to figure out who killed someone they didn't know and somehow coming up smelling of roses. However these ladies did ok, a few things that I thought were a bit much but it made more sense when it shifted from helping a stranger to helping each other. Gave them more agency in my mind.
Overall a nice cozy fantasy with an additional focus on women healing from their past and finding friendship.

This was the perfect cozy mystery palette cleanser book. I’m a huge fan of setting and this little town set in WNC had me at hello 🥴
I loved that the mystery took a backseat to the friendship of these 4 women who desperately needed each other. I am normally not a series person, but I can’t wait to read the next one.
