The thing about Stephen King's short story collections is that 1 of, say, every 3 stories works for me and actually entices me. That's the reason why I can be pretty touchy about short stories, and why they aren't my preference when it comes to reading.
This, however, hit the spot.
It was a true short story, with just enough information to get you sucked in before it hit you hard with the body of the tale. It was a wonderful collaboration, a true blend of both father and son's writing styles. I loved the gore, it was delightful, and I loved how it ended. I love when a story doesn't have a definitive end, but is there wide open for us to imagine what might have come next.
I really wish they would write more together, perhaps even a novel. I despised Sleeping Beauties, Owen King doesn't do it for me, but Joe Hill? Totally different ball game. I think it would be amazing!

Re-read 2019:
This is still a well-told story, and doesn't take long to get intense and suspenseful. However, this time around I thought the gruesome was a bit too much.

his was a super short story, just barely over 40 pages.
In this story we follow Beck and Cal, brother and sister. They're on their way to California to live with some relatives for a short time. On the way, driving with the windows down, they hear a young boy calling for help inside a field of tall grass. They go in the help and shit hits the fan.
Now I grew up in a place where we went into cornfields and whatnot, and this story reminded me so much of the claustrophobia you experience when you're deep in a corn field. And in true Stephen King, Joe Hill fashion, shit gets crazy and fairly disturbing.
But it's also short, so the character studies you normally get from King aren't present, which makes the book a bit less enjoyable to me.

Stephen King and Joe Hill need to write together more often!
4 stars. This book..... Was SCARY. At least to for me. Getting lost at an unknown place and then getting separated form someone you love..... Wuhhh that fills me with dread.
(Actually listened to this on audiobook)
TERRIFYING! Not sure how Stephen King comes up with these extremely messed up ideas and storylines.
