Slightly disturbed. Cliff hanger ending. I don’t know why I read this book, I didn’t like it, and yet I really want to see were this goes (not in a good way)
Info on the rape: (he doesn't do it, its talked about)

This book was reasonably enjoyable but I felt that about two thirds of the way though it was becoming quite repetitive. Wasn't expecting the ending though so bonus points for that.

One thing that I did find kind of annoying was that the main character is supposed to be British but occasionally would use phrases and terms that wouldn't be used here and I found that quite jarring.

So I genuinely hated everything about this book. Aside from the FMC, who was just generally unremarkable and unmemorable.
The start of the book was basically the same as the end of the book. There was no character growth or plot progression. It genuinely felt like I had just completely wasted my time reading through the book.

The MMC had no redeemable or likable qualities. He spends much of the story sexually harassing and assaulting the FMC, or putting her life in mortal danger while he goes off to take a nap. His whole plan is to use her to further his own goals—which will require him killing her—but wants to make sure he can use her for sex fist.
When he's not sexually harassing the FMC, he's enjoying the hell out of himself by killing. Everyone. Indiscriminately. In the most brutal ways possible. One scene in particular, he tortures and skins alive a 10-year-old boy before turning him into a monster, and he's having such a good time while he does it.

The FMC goes through one life threatening situation after another in this story, is constantly injured and hurt, and is forced throughout the entire story to go through extreme mental and emotional torment. She's treated as nothing but a playing by the MMC and a pawn by almost everyone else in the story, and because of the MMC she is always being target by someone or something trying to kill her. Or in one case, rape her and then kill her.

I picked this book up because the cover was beautiful, and it was listed as a fantasy romance. This story is not a romance. Nothing romantic, loving, or even consensually sexual happens between the MCs in this book. They lust after each other, and that's it.
The focus of the story is the MMC's aspirations for power, and the FMC trying to find a way out of the world of the fae. Ultimately neither of their plans come to fruition, and at the end of the book
the FMC commits suicide by walking into a field of carnivorous flowers and allowing them to burrow their vines into her body and consume her from the inside out
, which is something I wasn't expecting and really wished I could have avoided reading about.

I got this recommendation off of TikTok. I enjoyed the writing and there were few times where i wasn’t invested in the plot. SLOW burn romance. I will be starting the second book soon. I’ll be honest, I went into this book think I wouldn’t be able to finish the series, but I might be able to. If you liked ACOTAR I recommend this.

Saw the book on BookTok and it did not disappoint! I found out about the series yesterday finished the first book today, and have started the second one already. It has it's normal tropes, morally gray mc with a sarcastic, sweetheart FMC. The morally gray Valroy is funny, like his and Abigail's banter was just amazing, honestly my favorite part of the whole book. You really just fall in love with the characters as the book goes on, you want Abigail to figure out the Maze and hopefully get her freedom back, but you also want her to figure out the Maze so that maybe she sees Valroy isn't really as bad as he is.

There's alot of different mythical creatures in the book and they're all different and crazy sounding (in a good way) there's like a person who's made of glass, but can also shape shift!

The ending in this book made me rush to getting the second book and I'm so excited to see what happens to Valroy and Abigail.

Also Abigail isnt some 17 girl, she's around 25ish and that's sooo nice to see an "older" fmc. Young fmcs aren't bad but I don't want to read about a 17-20 year old in explicit scenes. (There's no sex in this book) but there was some detailed scenes.

It’s hard to find books that actually adhere to the villain being the love interest and oh my word KAK does this trope better than anyone I’ve ever read. Valroy is as easy to hate as he is to love and you really feel that dichotomy in Abigail’s thought process throughout the book. The only thing that throws me off (and this is from all of the KAK books I’ve read, is that the love/sex/steam/spice scenes always seem to be cut short or just not included. Which is very strange because what is included is normally so good!!! Either way, I really enjoyed this first installment and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series!!!!!
