Holy crap this was amazing! Fast paced with sooo many characters (Switch & Anole were my faves, those gossiping mongrels), but at the heart of it is a forbidden romance. And I’m all for it!!! This was such an addicting read... :)

Now that I know this is a translated book from a specific genre of books popular in Asia, the observations I had about it make more sense!

It was such an interesting story and so fun to read. But it lacked engaging storytelling and read more like a folktale than a novel. Some parts were also confusing, but I think part of that might have just been lost in translation. But I really liked the characters and the romance, so overall I enjoyed it and will read the second one eventually. I'm intrigued by this genre!

This read like one of those Chinese dramas that were dubbed over in Vietnamese that my mom liked to watch when I was young.

The overall plot of the story was intriguing, and the novelty of the characters was also very refreshing. Despite this, I found that there was a lot of martial arts present, and for those who do not know much about martial arts, those scenes were a bit harder to imagine and fully comprehend. Although I had difficulty comprehending these parts, the love story between the characters is a unique one-- mainly because of how different the characters are from typical characters who fall in love-- and not a tale as old as time as the fairytale retelling of love stories. The plot was just as intriguing as it was sad, and I am very excited to read the next installment in the series to continue following the unfolding of this beautifully crafted love story.

2.5 stars. Perhaps it was because it was a translation, but I found the writing style left much to be desired, and the characters lacked depth. However, in the second half of the book the story really picked up, and made it worth finishing.
