I saw the movie adaptation with Matt Damon and Jude Law several years ago and remember loving it. One of the first stories I consumed where I couldn't help but feel for, and sort of empatize with the villain and it made a huge impact. Deciding to read the book I was obviously unsure how it would compare to the movie, but I have to say, it's sooo good. Its clear the sorcematerial is the reason the movie is on of my favourites. The story is unique. The difference though is I definitely didn't empatize with Ripley as much in the book. He felt way creepier, narcissistic, and really just a despicable man. Yet I get why the movie decided to go in the direction it did cause you can't help but sort of sympatizing with Ripley too, in spite of everything. You find yourself ambivavalent when it comes to how he makes you feel. It's so well written and an i interesting portrait of a man managing to convince himself he deserves everything, no matter the cost of others.
Came in knowing nothing about the book so had no expectations. It was a fun read, very interesting to be in Tom’s head throughout and try to understand his thought process. Made me realize how much easier doing everything he did would have been when this was writtin in the 50s than it would be today.
Tom Ripley, you little freak. I enjoy an unreliable narrator and I also appreciate the excuse to watch this movie again.
