starting to think this guy wasnt talented at all,, just lucky as fuck
I read this many years ago (pre-Goodreads), and have now reread it for the NY Times Book Club (which I highly recommend). It's Thursday night, and Edmund White is the commentator. The Times book club chooses an older novel and has a contemporary writer to discuss the book. I'll update this post after I've listened to the club, but, for now, it's a more complicated (and more disturbing) read than I remembered, certainly more so than the movie. Tom Ripley is billed on the cover (and elsewhere) as a sociopath, but he has more emotional complexity than I had associated with sociopaths. I'll be interested to see how White interprets Ripley's actions, but I'm even more interested in what he'll say about his motivations and his reactions to the various events.

Honestly I just didn't care for this book, it was kinda boring and generally just frustrating. I typically love a good murder mystery. I guess if I read the series I might feel differently but this book did nothing to motivate me to read the rest.
a delightful uhdvurtuhsmuhnt for the american express and caffe latte. 12/10
one of the gayest books ever simply because it understands something unique to queer lust: the desire to become one, to emulate, to copy. the very basic notion of "do i want them or do i want to be them" when it's both. the self-realisation of tom ripley's homosexual longing comes through the maintenance of appearance and the narcissistic validation he gets from doing a good job at it. to take the role of dickie greenleaf is closest form of attainment he could ever hope for. and he could never really do it again with someone else, so i like to imagine he spends the rest of his life trying to relive that high. and that's romance, folks
